Traditional second language teaching involves lots of money, courses, tutoring, books, studying, exams and hours of showing learners how their native language and the target language are different. What would happen if we looked at it from the opposite perspective and instead focused on what they had in common?
What happens is that you quickly realize that you already know about 80% of what you need to know to be able to hold a relatively decent (although slow and sometimes meandering) conversation in Spanish. The other 20% is readily available on the internet for free.
You must be at least a tiny bit curious ... I love answering questions!

'Dos cervesas, por favor' was literally the only thing I knew how to say in Spanish when I arrived to Barcelona in 1992. I struggled with the language for a few weeks until I noticed something interesting. A few random things clicked for me and I suddenly realized that what I had been taught in school about language acquisition is total bullshit. It took no time after that to be able to converse confidently in both Spanish and Catalan (the predominant language of the region).
