The Banyan of Lahaina
Birds everywhere of varied and ancient kinds celebrate the twilight’s edges of dusk and dawn.. you know how they gather and become a peaceful, ecstatic raucous in reverent nomadic residence.. In Lahaina, Maui, overlooking the ocean.. there is an ancient Banyan I came to love, spanning the equivalent of two ny city blocks.. a park. Offering shelter to people of all critter-dom, including humans.. young, old, frail, bold, laughing playing sharing eating weeping reading thinking dreaming praying, skittering romping meditating throughout the days and nights.. at the beginnings of these two times, the gathering would swell, the energy, the choir of nature was deep from the heart endearment, most densely concentrated in peaceful cacaphony and colorfully riotous population and prayerful power. Between the beginnings and endings of night, always there would be a profound quietude, beneath the blanket of the stars.. a sacred place to be; indeed..
The Banyan tree of Lahaina was eventually sacrificed for a parking lot, I hear... and a 15 minute city. is it true? We can’t let this be true.
While the false ego of humanity contrives to out-do the life-nature of creation, and the birds have been twittering off the planet into the depths of twilight, perhaps this is why all souls have chosen to be here simultaneously in human aspects of form, spirit and soul incarnate at this pivotal
time.. we walk through this tunnel together. We walk through the darkness at the end of the 5th Kalpa, let it be before a new golden dawning
